Dev Blog: Why I Love Band Hero by GHDevTina
I'm a gamer. RPGs, FPS, MMOs, not to mention episodic games based on characters from early 90s PC titles. I love games for the fun, for the challenge, for the "I'm never going to beat this as long as I live" moment, followed by the elation when you *do* knock it out of the ballpark.
The great thing about music-based games, Guitar Hero specifically, is that they have always afforded both a really fun and challenging gameplay experience alongside great music! What's more, that music has always been extremely versatile and having something for almost everyone. If you love Metal, you're not going to find much better than Guitar Hero Metallica. Big fan of extreme guitar riffs and wailing solos? Everyone still has massive love for Dragonforce’s “Through the Fire and Flames” from Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock, which you can also play in the full band setup in Guitar Hero Smash Hits. Classic Rock? Guitar Hero Aerosmith. A big mix of everything? Guitar Hero World Tour covers the bases...
BUT!!!!! What if you're a fan of pop music? You know... that music that you sing along to in the car or shower, or if you're like me, the music that you love to belt out at the top of your lungs at a karaoke place or a friend’s party. The songs that just make you feel good and put you in a better mood by hearing them.
I'm talking about Culture Club, Janet Jackson, and maybe you can even work out your moves to a little bit of Marvin Gaye.
These are songs that are just fun to play, and what's more, they're songs that *everyone knows*... Say you want to fill out your band with a singer who isn't a "gamer"... what better way to do that then to offer them up the chance to sing along to The Go-Go's?!?! I know that personally, I know a lot of guys (and some gamer girls) who try desperately to get their significant others, parents, friends, and kids to play with them. This is a great way not just to introduce them to rhythm games, but ALSO to gaming as a whole.
Everyone has their own personal taste in music, but if any genre comes close to appealing to everyone, I think it would be these pop songs. As for me? I'm looking forward to taking this game home and playing it with my mom for some serious mother-daughter vocals competition. It's going to be awesome!
